FlashGenie SD-Card and MMC module

WindGenie

To improve the efficiency of small-scale wind turbine generators, this microprocessor-controlled device will regulate the generator output to optimize the tip speed ratio of the turbine and thereby obtain the maximum possible useable energy from the available wind.
It also monitors the charge state of the batteries and regulates the charging cycles to improve battery life.
In addition, it incorporates a datalogger capable of recording all parameters at set intervals from 5 to 240 minutes onto 32 MB SD-cards, for periods of more than a year.

WeatherGenie

The datalogging module of the above controller is available independently as a complete digital weather station which will record:
- wind direction
- wind speed
- temperature
- available solar energy
- humidity
- barometric pressure
A 32 MB SD-Card will permit uninterrupted recording for more than a year at programmable intervals.

Functional layout

FlashGenie SD-Card and MMC module

To enable embedded microprocessors to access SecureDigital and MultiMediaCard flash memory cards via a SPI port, this small circuit board provides the MMC and SD card connector and 5V-to-3.3V level translation circuitry as well as a low-drop-out 3.3 Volt regulator to supply the operating voltage for the SD-card from a 5V-powered mcu board.

For additional versatility, a real time clock chip and a holder for a 3 V Lithium battery is installed on the reverse side, to provide a permanent calendar when the mcu is powered down.

Communication with the SD card consists of four lines:
CS : Chip Select
CLK : Data Clock
MOSI : master out - slave in
MISO : master in - slave out

Two additional pins can be used for detecting card insertion and the position of the write-protect switch, and two leds can give user feedback under MCU control.

Communication with the DS1340 clock chip is accomplished via an I2C protocol using only two lines:
SDA - data
SCL -  clock

Circuit board dimensions: 50 x 35 mm
Operates with 5 V supply from the MCU board.
The card holder fits both SecureDigital and MultiMediaCards.

For 3.3 Volt processors, a simplified version dispenses with the level translation and the voltage regulator.
